Tips to draft Impressive LOR

As in the previous post we discussed LOR & its importance, Lets see how to write a perfect LOR that strikes the minds of the admission officers & help you impress them!

How to write a perfect LOR

Create a new letter for each recommendation

It is always best to create a new letter for each recommendation. This ensures that each letter is personalized & tailored to the specific school. It also allows you to update the letter as needed, which is important since recommendation letters can become outdated quickly.

Review your Resume

When writing a letter of recommendation (LOR), it is important to review your resume in order to be able to provide specific and detailed examples of your skills and accomplishments. This will allow the admission officer to get a better sense of your abilities and what you have to offer. In addition, by reviewing your resume you will be able to remind yourself of your past achievements and successes, which can help to boost your confidence when writing the letter.

Quantify your Strengths

One of the most important tip When writing a letter of recommendation (LOR) is not only highlighting the individual’s strengths, but also to quantify those. This will give the reader a more concrete sense of your abilities & achievements.

For example, rather than simply stating that an individual is a hard worker, it is more effective to say that they have consistently achieved high levels of productivity, even under challenging conditions. Similarly, stating that an individual is a good leader, try saying that they have successfully led teams with different individuals. These have helped them achieve common goals.

Including specific examples and statistics wherever possible will help to paint a more vivid picture of the individual’s strengths. Ultimately, the goal is to provide the reader with a well-rounded sense of the individual’s capabilities. This will help them make an informed decision about their suitability for the desired position.

Choose your recommender wisely

When you are writing a letter of recommendation (LOR), it is important to choose your recommender wisely. The recommender should be someone who knows you well and can speak to your strengths. They should also be someone who is respected in their field. A strong recommender can make all the difference in whether or not you are admitted to your program of choice.

Use Anecdotes/ Short Stories

It’s always a good idea to use anecdotes or short stories when writing letters of recommendation. This is because it gives the reader a more personal glimpse into who the person is and what they’re like. People more likely to remember Anecdotes and short stories than dry facts and figures.

General tips to consider
  • Make sure you use Standard font and print size, usually Times New Roman 12-point for printed letters or Arial 11-point font for electronically submitted letters
  • Don’t forget to mention accurate contact details of the recommender
  • Your LOR should be Simple & Crisp. Make sure it is not over 500 words
