Indian graduates completing MBBS abroad must clear a licensing exam to practise in India. Here’s what you need to know.
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a licensing exam required for Indian citizens who complete their MBBS from a medical institution outside India and wish to practise medicine in India. It is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). Students must pass FMGE before they can register with any State Medical Council.
The National Exit Test (NEXT) is an upcoming comprehensive exam that will replace the current FMGE for foreign graduates and the final year University exams for Indian medical colleges. It will serve simultaneously as the final year MBBS examination, a licentiate exam for medical practice registration, and a postgraduate entrance exam, all in one. It is being implemented under the National Medical Commission (NMC).
University selection is crucial for FMGE success. Choose NMC-compliant universities with strong clinical exposure and established FMGE coaching. Georgia and Uzbekistan show comparatively higher FMGE pass rates among our partner countries. WeConnect Overseas guides you in selecting the right university to maximise your chances of clearing FMGE/NEXT.
